msbrainOne of the most important lessons that we can teach young people is the importance of hard work and it’s direct connection to achievement. Also necessary is the ability to delay gratification, another invaluable life skill.

Not surprisingly, adolescents are practically hard wired to resist delaying gratification. It is often more fun to eat dessert, first before confronting the vegetables. In part, the adolescent brain is not fully developed. What’s more, delaying gratification is a learned behavior requiring much practice and diligence.

The spring is a perfect time to remind our children to complete their tasks (homework), honor their commitments, and finish the job at hand. There will be plenty of time for fun after the work is done.
